It’s great to start your day with a nourishing and delicious breakfast, even if you do not do this every day. I know, it’s good to eat muesli with fruit and yogurt, but sometimes I want to eat something good, very creamy and with intense flavour. A hot Croque Monsieur Sandwich is what we need in these days 🙂
Croque Monsieur is a hot sandwich, renowned in French bistros. Ready in minutes it has a rich taste due to the combination of ham, cheese and béchamel sauce and a crispy texture due to browning in butter. Some people may find odd to add Béchamel sauce in a sandwich, but I assure you that the result will convince you. Traditionally this Croque Monsieur Sandwich has Gruyere cheese, but you can use any cheese that melts …
Cut six slices of bread of the same thickness, or use 6 toast bread slices. Butter the slices with a thin layer of soft butter or, optionally, you can spread a teaspoon of Dijon mustard on two slices of bread.
Next, spread bread slices with Béchamel sauce, dividing evenly and extending all the way to the edges add the ham and grated cheese, top with remaining slices of bread, and form a sandwich.
Preheat a skillet, melt the butter and cook each sandwich, until it becomes golden-brown and cheese melts, about 3 minutes per side. When are golden-brown, top each sandwich with one tablespoon Béchamel sauce and grated cheese, and place them in a pan in the oven at 430 degrees F (220 degrees C). Bake until cheese is brown and bubbling, about 10 minutes.
Enjoy, Croque Monsieur Sandwich!
